Practical Humility

“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:6-8)

I was at a gathering with many important people which included a light meal. As I went through the line I accidentally poured some water from a pitcher and it overflowed making a mess. Immediately, a lady came near, cleaning up the mess I made, mitigating my embarrassment and helping me. This was an act of humility in service. Every Believer must put on humility to progress in our conformity with Yeshua. We should actively consider how to demonstrate humility, determining what humility requires in various situations.

We must still express courage in our faith, boldness to speak and act in step with the Spirit’s leading, and do so with humility. If we reach out or step up, do so in faith, then cover yourself in humility. Consider how God can get the most glory, how you can stay low while exalting God. Timidity is not humility, nor is fear. A servant is humble as he serves others. A servant carries the food, tools and cleaning supplies which the Lord uses in His ministry. Servants are ready for service and quick to respond because humility gives them a place near the Lord who is at work. Let humility lead us to a place behind and out of the way after carrying out our assignment, quick to respond and quick to withdraw. “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,” (Luke 12:35)

“For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:9) Yeshua served God by serving His Children, which required humility. He is our example as He washed the disciples feet. (John 13:12-14) We do not look for thanks or let men put us forward for what the Lord has done, even perhaps especially, when He does it through us. Make sure the Lord gets the credit and glory. A trained servant can get out of the way after serving. We become a nobody in service, but are still loved and near the Lord. Our lack of notoriety and anonymity are choices we make to better serve and honor the Lord. Humility is our qualification, our accreditation comes from the Lord, not men. We can expect to receive more faith as we cloth ourselves in humility and serve the Lord. (Luke 17:5-10) Practical Humility is redundant as it is never impractical.
