Where Help Comes From

“For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith…for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.” (Hebrews 4:2,10)

Our times of need are many and frequent. We are not all trained to deal with our needs; we try to address them ourselves, try to ignore it, push things down inside and seek distraction. Consider our current society where the “homeless” wander the streets broken, addicted, confused, needy, erecting squatter camps in which to continue in their destitution. Society at large does the same thing with respect to these people, ignoring them, giving them sustenance without help or hope; confused itself how to deal with “homelessness” as if it was a weather event, rather than broken people.

The truth is that we as a society and nation have lost our way. We are wandering, trying to no avail, confused, needy, looking for distractions, hiding from reality, broken and needy. Our efforts are futile, the problems too large and complex, beyond our ability to solve, too big to understand, but felt within and without, undeniable, seen everywhere, constantly crying out to be addressed and restored. This malaise is not going away, not getting better, it is not a season that will pass, it is not a mirage or figment of our imagination. It cries out for help, it demands attention, it is like a wound or injury, and open oozing sore.

We recognize all this in its various forms, but are helpless. Were does help, mercy and grace come from, the Psalmists asked looking to the hills. (Ps. 121:1) Politics, money, Social programs/charities, good intentions, and all human efforts cannot fix these symptoms of a deeper need – our Messiah Yeshua. We must return to God.

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)
