Five Lies of our Anti-Christian Age

“Five Lies of our Anti-Christian Age” is a book by Rosaria Butterfield related to the following five lies:

1. Homosexuality is normal

2. Being a spiritual person is kinder than being a biblical person.

3. Feminism is good for the world and the church.

4.Transgenderism is normal.

5. Modesty is an outdated burden that serves male dominance and holds women back.

Rosaria is a former lesbian feminist professor and teacher of queer theory, who was saved from this lifestyle and viewpoints and now writes and speaks on the subjects discussed in this book. “[T]he world is in chaos, and the church is divided because we have failed to obey God and value his plan for how men and women should live”, she states in the book. She observes that even some Christians have been deluded into rejecting God’s definitions of men and women. Rosaria compares America to the Tower of Babel filled with people that think they know better than God. America has normalized, glamorized, and institutionalized behaviors and unions, including homosexuality and transgenderism, which God has deemed spiritually deadly and physically harmful (Romans 1:18-31).

In our postmodern age, the mainstream view is that it is perfectly acceptable for a person to “reject truth, not because it’s false, but because it hurts,” Butterfield asserts. Christians must learn the difficult lesson that just because something is offensive does not mean it is untrue, and because it is true, it must be accepted, even if it offends us. In addition to her Biblical response to homosexuality and transgenderism, Rosaria also provides good Biblical counsel on the subjects of feminism and modesty (both in dress and conduct) in a book that is addressed primarily to women but from which men can also benefit.

I highly recommend this book, especially for anyone confused about the proper Biblical response to the issues discussed. I had recently read Rosaria’s autobiography, which was written several years before this book. Although I enjoyed it, I was dismayed to see Rosaria, even after her salvation and although strongly identifying homosexuality and transgenderism as sinful, recommended Christians use the preferred pronouns of transgenders and condemn conversion therapy in the name of compassion. However, in “Five Lies” Rosaria repents of these and other similar positions and the role she played early on as a Christian writer that helped solidify the lies she is now warning against. She recognized she had allowed her empathy to supersede God’s Word and in so doing she failed to biblically love these people. “Five Lies” corrects these errors and is very Biblically sound.

  1. I’m glad you included the part about her correction, too many times we write-off people who make mistakes and later repent of those errors. I once thought it was impudent to pray for Revival, but I was corrected and consistently pray for it now.
