Civil War

“Civil War” is a recent movie about a fictional Civil War that has broken out in American between the government forces and the Florida Alliance and Western Forces (oddly a Texas/California alliance). There is no background given on the reasons for the Civil War or how it broke out. Apparently, the government/President disbanded the FBI, outlawed journalists and became authoritarian and the Florida Alliance and Western Forces, separately, seceded from the Union. The movie begins with the rebels closing in on Washington D.C. but very little of the movie is about the Civil War fighting. Rather, the movie is entirely about the journalists (played by Kirsten Dunst among others) who travel to Washington to attempt to interview the President and their adventures along the way. The story is very boring and unrealistic with persons fighting each other throughout the country who are not part of either the government or the rebels but for some unexplained reason seem to just want to kill/torture people. There is also one town that attempts to ignore the Civil War happening around them which is a silly and impractical storyline. It is meant to be an anti-war movie, but it was needlessly dark and attempted, unsuccessfully, to make the journalists appear the heroes. It did not attempt to promote a political point of view directly, but the President might have been Donald Trump and they mentioned a massacre of Antifa in the past and elimination of the FBI which indirectly points to the Left’s view of MAGA persons.

This was one of the worst movies I ever saw. Life is portrayed as meaningless. People are corrupt. Justice is cruel. Life is a bitter struggle. Character development and acting is poor as you never care about the main characters, the journalists, who only seem to want to get the story/picture, at one point even taking a picture of one of the journalists themselves as they get shot. An attempt is made to glorify journalists as smart, resourceful, and courageous but they only come across as cold, numb, and empty. Avoid this movie at all costs.
