“Over the past four decades, Christianity has grown faster in China than anywhere else in the world.” (Boston University)
There are roughly 44 million registered Christians in China, but others estimate the total number could be has high as 130 million. (Pew Research) It is not illegal to have a bible in China, as it once was, although there is a bias against all western influences. There are many varieties or groups of Christians in China including Catholic, Protestant, and charismatic. Henan is thought to be the area with the most Christians. Through various survey’s large numbers say they believe in Jesus, but among these some also believe in other religious figures such as Buddha, Allah or Others. The Government seeks to control religious activity as it does everything in China. China opened up to economic growth in the 1980’s. Christianity expanded significantly until 2010 when it has seemed to plateau. Difficulty in surveying the population and any reluctance of people to openly respond with their true beliefs can hinder accurate results.
In several ways the Chinese church appears to mimic recent trends in America with numbers declining regarding regular church attendance. In America there is increasing mistrust or lack of trust in Government which in the early 1960’s was around 75%, but has recently declined to 16%. (Pew Research) With a government actively promoting identity politics, woke ideology and anti-christian bias people are reluctant to acknowledge accurate religious beliefs. Exasperating these concerns the high-tech and Main stream media joined the Democrat party’s promotion of woke ideology and opposition to traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs. During Covid the Government suspended church attendance while permitting similar secular activities. LBGTQ and Atheists groups regularly bring suit against Christians or Christian organizations that express Christian values.
An independent Press was considered by the American founders as a proponent and protector of liberty, yet recent party affiliation and monopolization of Media has released a communistic level of big government oppression against any who resist its tyrannical edicts, woke mandates, and threatened penalties. Will christians and churches soon be forced underground in America as they were and still remain in China? Some may point to democrat leaders who assert their Catholicism, yet totally oppose it in their political actions. Even Republicans voted to allow government spying on citizens without a warrant.
Christian persecution has increased and continues increasing around the world. Nevertheless, the message of the Good news of Yeshua, Messiah is reaching and impacting people even in closed islamic countries. Are Chinese Christians more acquainted with and understanding of American Christians than either of their respective governments? Is faith in Yeshua Messiah and the God of the Bible more important than all the contrivances of men and Governments?
