Slavery is not mentioned in the Constitution and differences over it resulted in a Civil war that almost destroyed the nation. Once again a divisive issue, abortion has been turned over to state jurisdiction. How will it be resolved?
Consider the facts, in no particular order:
Slavery:
Economic motive: Source of much revenue to slave traders and large plantation owners.
Moral issue: Life-time servitude and family breakup of slaves. Slaves were treated as property, sub-human or at least like children incompetent of self determination.
Congressional division: Tremendous contention between respective parties. A settlement was given to slave owners that permitted return of escaped slaves.
Anti-slavery sentiment: Not strong or deeply held in the non-slavery states until “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, a book that epitomized slaves as innocent and virtuous (uncle Tom) and slave traders utterly evil, (Simon Legree). Pro-slavery was fueled by those who sought to protect states rights against an encroaching Federal Government.
Political factors: Slavery was integral to the South’s agricultural economy. Southern Politicians and the Supreme Court adamantly protected slavery. Anecdotal atrocities and Harriet Tubman’s “Underground Railway” gave momentum to anti-slavery proponents.
Religious influence: Pro-religious leadership cited slavery in scripture. Anti-slavery preachers rejoined the chorus of predecessors like UK’s Wilberforce who condemned slavery’s brutality and injustice. Northern churches were more humanistic, condemning a wide range of bad behavior along with Slavery.
End resolution: Civil war and destruction of the Southern state’s economy, society, with families devastated on both sides. Slavery was abolished nationwide by Constitutional amendment.
Abortion:
Economic motive: Produces massive revenue to Planned Parenthood, and the abortion industry via government funding/support.
Morale issue: Death of unborn baby, often viable at point of abortion, in a heinous invasive procedure.
Congressional division: Tremendous contention between parties, even within parties. A settlement exists for pro-abortionist as abortion pills are being made available via mail to all states.
Pro-abortion sentiment was not a major issue until Roe v. Wade was repealed by the Supreme Court and abortion returned to State jurisdiction. Modern medical science indicated an infant heart beat very early and viability at 15 weeks, indicating life of an unborn child as opposed to an inert fetus, increasing anti-abortion sentiment. The movie “The Silent Scream” described the pain unborn infants certainly feel from abortion with its barbaric atrocious procedures. Sever emotional consequences often follow women that are traumatized for life after an abortion.
Political factors: Democrats use abortion as a political wedge for Liberals against Conservatives. Medical professions and the abortion industry are a powerful source of money and politics. Media equates Abortion with the women’s rights movement. Anecdotal accounts of back alley abortions set fire to early Pro-abortion debate.
Religious influence: Churches become divided with no middle ground for individuals. Certain Pastors simply ignore controversial issues like Abortion. Catholics remain scripturally opposed to Abortion.
End Resolution: Currently unresolved, but America stands at a crossroads with all its traditional foundations, freedoms and liberties in question. Will God say, “Enough”, to nations that sacrifice innocents by the tens of millions? Has Judgement already started with parents mutilating their own children through transsexual procedures and increasing gender dystopia? The similarities between Slavery and Abortion are compelling; will God resolve Abortion as He did with Slavery?
