Humility Revisited

Have you ever desired humility? Normally we imagine ambitious positions ranking high in public standing whether in regard to fame, wealth, fashion, or recognition. There is nothing wrong with pursuing honorable endeavors, but there are two very different paths. The worldly path is centered in promoting ones self, taking  steps to be seen, gathering attention, seeking powerful people and ingratiating them for status and gain. The kingdom path toward honor is by humility, for scripture says,

“In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”

(1 Peter 5:5-6) Yeshua said, “…For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)

God’s ways are opposite from the world. Worldly ways are to grab what ever you want; while God says, submit with humility and trust me. Each path can lead to things that appear to be honorable or famous, but there is a great difference in those whom the world exalts and those whom God exalts. Worldly fame and success is unsatisfying, exhausting, fleeting and tentative. When God raises people up it is a blessing full of peace, purpose, satisfaction and meaning. However, these different paths more often produce failure and destruction for the proud person and peace with blessing for the humble one.

We see others and compare ourselves, trying desperately to find our way, our place and purpose. There is one way for life, fulfillment, achievement, satisfaction, peace and love, our ultimate desire – Yeshua Messiah. He made it very clear saying, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven…Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Matthew 18:3; Luke 18:17) Little children are dependent, trusting, accepting, lowly and humble. God is delighted to be in the presence of children and welcomes them, giving them a place at the front near him. To seek God, His Kingdom, authority, lordship, and our highest calling in Messiah Yeshua, we follow the path of humility, becoming less, lowly, a servant, and a “nobody” to the world. Then, in His presence where Holy Spirit leads we will find more than we could ever think or imagine, life abundant forevermore.
