My Fortress

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” Psalm 91:1-7

No matter what “terrors” we may face in life such as sickness, death of loved ones, various persecutions, etc. we, as Christians, have nothing to fear as long as we dwell in the shelter of the Most High. Our security is never in our circumstances or ability but in God alone. To “dwell” in the shelter of the Most High indicates a continuous intimate relationship established with God. We are not to wait to turn to Him only in times of trouble but continually “abide” in Him. The “shadow” of the Almighty indicates His closeness to His people and how He shields from the scorching heat. His protection is as gentle and warm as a mother bird sheltering her young under her wings. A “fowler” is a hunter of birds and illustrative of persons who would lay traps for us.

If our close relationship is established with God we will not “fear the terrors” of the day or night including pestilence (disease/plagues) or destruction. Even where we face otherwise insurmountable situations God will not let true destruction come near us. This does not mean we will not suffer at times for God or even be martyred but God will give us grace to endure whatever we have to go through and will take us on to Heaven to be with Him in eternity. We have nothing to fear.

Let us be diligent to maintain a close relationship with God through regular Bible reading and prayer and worship so we can take advantage of the wonderful benefit of God’s perfect protection in times of storm.
