Firebrand

““I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick [Firebrand] snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the Lord. “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God.”” (Amos 4:11-12)

A firebrand is a person who is passionate about a particular cause, typically inciting change and taking radical action. It is also a stick of wood burning on one end. Caution is deemed necessary around a firebrand, whether a person or stick. A firebrand is sometimes a leader called to accomplish God’s purposes. ““ ‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.” (Zechariah 3:8-9)

I would advise against becoming a firebrand, even if the cause is worthy. However, if that is your destiny you will have no choice. You may wonder why others are afraid to burn as you do and see radical action like some innovators have urged, “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!” The masses argue against absolutes, even liberty, truth and justice. Criminals, communists and rebels embrace violence and force in their pursuit of selfish power, rather than ideals given to all by God.

“The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.” (Rom. 12:29) To be joined with Israel, which is a firebrand among nations is not the worst association considering God’s grace, mercy and faithfulness. The essential aspect is to stay in step with God’s leading. Though He demands obedience He gives grace and help to the humble servant. (Heb. 4:14-16) The path will be lonely and fraught with accusations, misunderstanding and resistance, even occasionally from those who have every reason to stand together. The call is heavenly, spiritual and may not be fully completed or realized in one lifetime, but faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance of what is unseen, moreover, God’s plans are better and span generations in a more glorious shared fulfillment. (Heb. 11:1, 39-40) God is in control, but also good and loving to all He has made.
