“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” (1 Peter 3:3-4)
This world is full of beauty, not the lest of which are beautiful women. Like many famous men today, king David, committed adultery. “The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” (2 Samuel 11:3) Bathsheba got pregnant and David began a process to cover up his transgression. His initial efforts failed, so he had her husband killed in battle, as he was a soldier. Then David took her as his wife. However, nothing is hidden from God, and this displeased the Lord.
Bathsheba’s role in this story is limited, such that we don’t know much from her perspective. It was probably an honor to be invited to the kings palace, so she understandably went. The King was adored by the people and apparently attractive to Bathsheba. Some teachers point out that David was usually at this time with the army in their military campaigns, so if he had been where he belonged this transgression would not have happened, but that is speculation. Also, he had several wives in his palace, so feminine company appeared available.
Beautiful women are not only sought out by men, but the entire fashion industry caters to women by offering illustrations defining “Beauty” to the public. It is a cliche among men that women notice beautiful women as much or more than they do, although from a different perspective. In the movie, “Enchanted April”, Miranda Richardson says to Polly Walker, “Beauty won’t last you should make the most of it while you can.” Bathsheba, wittingly or not, leveraged her beauty into the position of queen.
Scripture teaches that God’s Kingdom is opposite from the world, thus in heaven those who are the most beautiful will be those who reflect most consistently the traits of King Yeshua, such as love, kindness, mercy, selflessness, forgiveness, humility and faith. Believers will certainly receive new glorified heavenly body’s in heaven. (1 Cor. 15:40-44) I believe this reality is occasionally foreshadowed in this life when we get to know people that are “diamonds in the rough” which refers to inner beauty seen through acts of kindness and a loving spirit.
