Raising Chickens

Families raising chickens at home has made a historic comeback; a very successful and beneficial practice that was lost in our high-tech pursuit of worthless distractions. Without researching statistics, antidotal experience is one indication, but conclusive evidence was provided by the Babylon Bee, a very humorous satire site that published two articles within a few weeks on ladies raising chicken at home. https://babylonbee.com/news/wife-offers-husband-compromise-if-he-lets-her-get-chickens-shell-let-him-do-all-the-work

The nuance of satire is lost if there is no understanding of the basic premise floating around in society. Sometimes I will fail to grasp the point of particular article and must check the recent news events to appreciate the wonderful satirical humor. For example, “Supreme Court rules Donald Trump can be President”, was about it’s recent decision overruling District Court Judge’s nationwide edicts of Trumps executive branch actions with which certain hand-picked judges disagreed. Satire twists reality in just the right degree to highlight an absurdity. In recent years, society has become so absurd in fact, it was hard to distinguish satire from the truth and that’s not funny. 

Many local government’s have sanctioned raising hen’s in the suburbs. Families all around are delighting in this revival of an age old practice on the family farm. Like the WWII era “victory garden” which promoted raising vegetables in backyards of suburban homes, these small chicken operations generate valuable nourishment for families and friends throughout the city and nation. However, the intangible benefits far outweigh the physical produce. 

Raising chickens is often a family effort and perfectly suited to women who have the ability to manage daily functions far better than men. Children find delight in chicks and gathering eggs. Men have made the building of chicken coups and enclosures into an art form. I was an early adaptor when I designed and constructed “The World’s Greatest Chicken Tractor”. https://www.github.developerdan.com/greatestchickentractor/ . This coup was a scale model of the famous cathedral in Florence Italy, but also incorporated various aspects of security against varmints, feeding, watering and movement for chicken grazing. My daughter asked if I would make her a chicken coup, but later decided not to pursue it. Nevertheless, the idea took root in my consciousness and this was the result. 

For hundreds of years people around the world have kept chickens for sustenance, satisfaction, and even as pets. This grassroots revival across America is synonymous with vegetable gardening, beekeeping, quilting, home schooling, camping, hiking, etc. However, the last revival will be the best, a spiritual revival when the generations are united in Yeshua, Messiah.
