A Dream and Message

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1)

This morning I woke from what seemed like a long dream. I had been walking a long road, it was a gravel pedestrian pathway on which many people were traveling. Everyone was going in the same direction. It was not crowded, but there were travelers as far as you could see in either direction. No one was running in a hurry to get ahead or barely crawling along.

There were shops along the way so you could rest, eat and get supplies. With a little money you could get what you needed from the shops. There was not much conversation along the road, but a little and some trading in order to get needed cash. There were no carts or vehicles for transportation. If you had any possessions they were yours to carry. Some things were left beside or in the road as they became more of a burden than they were worth.

Most people were serious and occupied by the journey, I didn’t see any parties or groups camping along the road, but there were people going in and out of the shops. In these there could have been all sorts of activities, I guessed, but didn’t know for sure. Everyone traveled and the road was long.

The sense or feeling of this dream was that it represented life as a shared journey among the living. All non-essential desires, distractions, and frivolity of life were removed or invisible, the shared experience of living, aging over time and gradually changing by location on the road were our commonality.

We can think up all sorts of pass-time activities in addition to our work of providing a living and caring for ourselves and our families. In God’s providence He gives us all we need to live. In the end, life is a journey where we reach our destined “end of the road” over time. We cannot stop or suspend the time we are given. When everything is stripped away, we can despair or embrace purpose by faith. We are small and very limited, but the gift of life, a journey in this world, a purpose and destination can only be seen or known by faith from above. Just as we have been given everything we truly need, we can believe there is a reward waiting at the end. (Heb 11:6) If we know nothing of God, but His providence that is enough. However, there is more, much more, because He has revealed Himself in glorious specific magnificence. Contrary to this dream, for Believers life is filled with God’s love, life, truth, purpose and goodness.
