Delight

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalms 37:4)

Delight is an emotion, full of satisfaction, thrilling, and pleasing. Why would God direct us to delight in Him? Is He directing us away from false delights offered in this world which have no ability to satisfy, but eventually bring pain and regret in the end. Is He offering us a reward for seeking and finding Him. As love Himself, is He desiring to pour His love into our heart.

How are we to enter into this delight? Thanksgiving, praise and worship are paths to His gates and into His courts. (Ps. 100) In His presence there is all we need. Brother Lawrence said, “There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God…All the world suffers and I, who deserve the severest discipline, feel joys so continual and great that I can scarcely contain them.”

The fog of distraction in this world and our proclivity to be preoccupied with temporal physical cares of life, rather than Spiritual realities of King Yeshua fill our being with trinkets and trash instead of the glories that are ours in Him. The solution is not self-flagellation, but asking in faith for Him to purge our hearts and fill us anew with His Presence. If you are a Believer, you can probably remember the thrill and peace of that first love overwhelming your soul as you accepted Him and were born again by the Holy Spirit. Those early days are like a honeymoon of God’s lovingkindness.

God’s path, the abundant life of a follower of Yeshua, is an unfolding journey of variety. God invented variety and He gives us refreshing along with struggles, occasional hardship  and a never-ending peace that we can access anytime. As we delight ourselves in Him, He responds as a person, a father, King of the universe, a friend, the only wise God with all we truly need. His delights are too deep and broad to fully describe, but once tasted they are not soon forgotten, like the desires of our heart. If we seek the Lord, we will find him as we seek him with all our heart and with all our soul. (Deut. 4:29) Every marvelous, glorious, supernatural, all powerful loving aspect of God is our highest purpose and delight. “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

(Psalms 34:8)
