“Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.” (Revelation 22:11)
The lamp we have gives light, if it is burning the oil by which it operates. The lamp can run out of fuel and will not shine its light. The parable of the ten virgins teaches several important realities with symbols. Five of the virgins are distinguished by being ill-prepared for a delayed wedding ceremony. All went to sleep, but at the call of the coming of the Bridegroom they trimmed their lamps. The five who were not prepared for a delay ran out of oil, could not go in and were locked out. (Matt. 1:1-13)
Being alert and watching for the return of Yeshua is symbolized by the wedding feast and it uncertain starting time. This teaches that we are to look forward to Yeshua’s return in expectation, though we don’t know the day or hour. (V. 13) What does the oil represent? Where is it from and why is it required? All through scripture oil is representative of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the power source, connection and indwelling of God for each Believer. It produces light that reveals the pathway of God’s will, purpose and presence. Our preparation for Kingdom living is keeping the oil flowing from our connection with the Spirit. Turning away to worldly pursuits and going in our own fallen human nature is contrary to a life under the leading of the Holy Spirit. Everyone of the virgins had a lamp and knew it would be necessary. This symbolizes God’s provision of His word and revelation of Yeshua, Messiah, His Son to the whole world. Everyone has been invited to the wedding, but many will either refuse or be unprepared to come. There are no second chances after we die or fail to welcome the Holy Spirit’s reign after this life.
We can get frustrated with end-time prophecy and it’s inherit uncertainty, and stop reading and thinking about future events, associated with Yeshua’s return. However, He says, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” (Revelation 22:12, 20) Also, Israel is central to the Lord’s return and is intertwined with the revelation and unfolding nature of prophecy, so we should keep our spiritual connection with Israel in mind, looking for it’s redemption in which we share. (Eph. 2:19-22)
