This is a sad truth, in history there have been churches that accepted tyranny, evil, and wickedness in opposition to Yeshua. Apostate refers to a person or group who renounces a religious belief. The teaching […]
“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?” I Corinthians 6:9. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48.
Salvation and good works go hand in hand. Once we are saved by grace through belief in Christ’s death on the cross for our sins, we will
In instructing the twelve Apostles before sending them out Christ said “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Matthew 10:40. We, as followers of Christ, in a real sense, carry Christ with us. Bonhoeffer puts it this way when commenting on this verse – “They are now Christ’s fellow-workers, and will be like him in all things. Thus they are to meet those to whom they are sent as if they were Christ himself. When they are welcomed into a house, Christ enters with them. They are bearers
“These twelve Jesus sent forth, and charged them, saying, ‘Go not into any way of the Gentiles, and enter not into any city of the Samaritans; but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’ ” (Matt. 10:5-6).
In “The Cost of Discipleship” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer the author points out that all activities of disciples of the Lord are subject to the clear precepts of God. Disciples are, therefore, free from the tyranny of their own ideas and calculations. Further, if Christ will not let us preach the gospel in any particular place, we must
In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus said “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet
In reading the Bonhoeffer biography by Eric Metaxas, I was struck by how Bonhoeffer maintained his joy and basic Christian goodness even in the midst of persecution while in prison. Like Joseph in the Bible, even the prison authorities were drawn to him, finding him genuinely kind and generous – even those guards who were despised by the other prisoners. Metaxas says that “He was a genuinely good man, a living rebuke to the forces that oppressed them and over which they (both prisoners and guards) had little power.” He became a confessor to those in the prison – even the guards. Afterward prisoners wrote about…
The following passage from the Bonhoeffer biography by Eric Metaxas really spoke to me. Hitler had just came to power (by popular election no less) but had not as yet gained complete power and had to use persuasion to accomplish what he later accomplished by decree. He was attempting to get the Church to come into league with the State and throw off any doctrine that contradicted Nazi doctrine including throwing out the whole Old Testament as too Jewish. Part of the Church immediately begin to fall in line with Hitler and most of the rest eventually did as the church leadership and lay persons very much wanted to be part of the fashionable Nazi opinions of the day which were…
Dietrich Bonhoeffer is known for his opposition to Hitler ending in his martyrdom and also for great works he published including “Costs of Discipleship”. However, before these events, right after he obtained his doctorate […]
