Consider how little meaning we attribute to the things we hear in the news, from our friends, co-workers and family. Some of us are worse than others in this regard, perhaps I’m in the eightieth percentile of those who discount, question, disregard, or absolutely ignore much of what I hear, depending on the source, topic, and substance. I don’t know whether I learned this or it is simply a preference (or flaw) in my personality. I try to be polite with regard to other’s opinions and enjoy hearing different views on many topics. Recent developments in our society have increased the need to question the “media” as our first amendment rights seem to be under attack by those sworn to protect them, but the uncertainty and division in which we live causes anyone to question public opinion.
Now consider the one truthful source and authority – God’s word. All but devout believers may scoff, citing the multitude of varying opinions and interpretations of scripture. This is a fact, particularly, with respect to prophecy as it has yet to be fulfilled. Even from the first Century there were debates on how a Believer should live and conduct themselves regarding religious duties, holidays, customs, personal interactions, even spiritual matters? However, the essentials were and still are held in tremendous unity by the vast majority of professing Christians. In fact, I believe there is more unity among Believers on the central tenants of Faith, than in politics, science, history, philosophy, language or many other spheres of knowledge. For example, the Apostles Creed is a summary of Christian Faith that few would deny. (See https://billygraham.org/answer/what-is-the-apostles-creed/)
Moreover, we believe God is Sovereign over Heaven and Earth and His will immutable.
This brings me back to casual skepticism and it’s serious implications for eternity. Scripture says that God work’s everything out for the Good of Believers who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Rom. 8:28) God’s will is carried out, irrespective of what we see or how we interpret it. At the Judgment everyone ever born will be judged by their thoughts, attitudes, intentions, and secrets of their heart. (Rom. 2:16) In the end, we will see how God worked good out of things meant for evil for Believers. (Gen. 50:20) Absolutely everything in human history will unfold at the judgment to reveal God’s mercy, love, justice and truth exactly as recorded and foretold in scripture. Yeshua said, “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” (Matt. 5:18) We must regard every scripture with complete truth and applicability. Any casual doubt, questioning or disregard will be judged. (e.g. 1 Corinthians 11:29-32) God disciplines us in this life, so we will not be judged later, but it is a serious matter to disregard any scripture. Lord, forgive our carelessness and apathy.
