True Greatness

I was thinking about talents, aptitude, skill, expertise, ability, which we all have to a certain degree. It’s much easier to consider what we cannot do, particularly, as we look around at others demonstrating various abilities that seem great. Scripture reminds us how small or lowly we are in a world of forces and spirits seeking to dominate us. Most of us have drifted into a career path, vocation or job. If we are blessed it is something that utilizes our talents and abilities. It may be simply be the best current alternative for providing a living for our family. For a person to work and earn money to provide food, shelter and clothing, etc. for those for whom we are responsible, this is a great endeavor and purpose.

I believe when it is over some great people will have spent their lives toiling, working, enduring, in order to provide and make things better for their loved ones. The nature and measure of greatness is not fame, money, beauty, power, possessions, but unselfish love we give during our brief time on earth. The vast multitudes of people down through the generations were and are occupied in this critical activity – loving. Yet, the Media, Government, and secular Society focus is concentrated on the famous, rich, powerful, beautiful ones and their praise.

There will be an accounting and everyone will be judged by what they have done. One may say, “I’m a good person”, but what is the standard? God’s standard is perfection with His law, which He gave to Israel. The Ten Commandments are an excellent summary. (Exod. 20:3-17)

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

2. You shall not make idols.

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor your father and your mother.

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery.

8. You shall not steal.

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10. You shall not covet.

Israel couldn’t keep these adequately, so God sent His Son, Israel’s Messiah to impart His righteousness through His blood sacrifice to all who believe, rely, trust, and accept Him by faith. That is the greatest expression of love, Yeshua giving His life for us while we were still rebellious sinners. (John 3:16-17) So, in this light and truth, it compels us to turn away from worldly ways and thinking and surrender to God, His love, and transformation through  Holy Spirit empowerment. (Rom. 5:1-5)
