Favorite Fruit

“down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:2)

To say I have a favorite fruit makes no sense because I like all fruit and am constantly seeking new taste sensations. However, some facts exist to suggest I do have a favorite. When I was very young my aunt usually had bananas and I would occasionally make a request for one as I smelled the inviting exotic aroma. During our 45 years of marriage I have been eating a banana almost every day. After several years my wife picked up my habit which depleted our banana supplies, but served as a reminder for her to by more, as necessary. We keep two of our grandchildren regularly and others visit often, on these occasions they observe our breakfast banana consuming routine. Now it seems our youngest granddaughter has developed a taste for two bananas per visit, one in the morning and another on her way home in the afternoon. It is a good thing that bananas are  an economical healthy treat.

I much prefer ripe bananas over green ones, in fact, I don’t like to eat one until it has at least a hint of spots on the peel. This creates a considerable requirement for our supply chain since most bananas in the store are less than ripe, often as green as lettuce. So we have to purchase enough to ripen while we eat those that are ripe. Not everyone is as particular about how ripe a banana should be as I am, and many feel they are rotten when spots appear on the peel. However, this provides an occasional bonanza for me as no one in our family will eat a banana with big spots or black streaks except me. These ultra ripe bananas are the best most sweet and flavorful as long as they have not been bruised. However, If there are too many in this state my wife deems them fit only for banana bread.

Bananas are high in potassium and are a healthy snack for children and adults. Considering they are only around 25 cents a piece, they are a bargain. I enjoy all fruit like figs, apricots, cherries, apples, pears, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, persimmons, dates, coconut, papaya, pomegranates, mango, pineapple, every variety of berries, even guava, if its very ripe, to name a few, but bananas must be my favorite. Fruit is eternal as it is even in heaven. Praise God for fruit.
