“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the Lord is clean enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” Psalm 19:7-9.
What a blessing to have the completed canon of scripture which, with the aid of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26), is available, by itself, to us to make us complete, fully equipped to meet the demands of godly ministry and righteous living. The Scriptures rebuke wrong behavior and points the way back to the correct way as well as gives positive instruction on godly living.
In Psalm 19, we see that the Word of God leads to salvation, wisdom, joy, enlightenment, is eternal and true. “Sure” in the Hebrew means “firmness, certainty , pillar, support”. The Word of God is our firm support, truth we can rely on, and we can measure the truthfulness of any teaching against it.
The word for “making wise the simple” relates to a person who is influenced by every doctrine that comes along and tends to change with the next wind. The Word is our foundation of truth that we can always go back to and which will keep our doctrine firm and correct and prevent us from getting off track to false beliefs.
We are lucky to live in a time with the completed cannon of the Word of God available to us. With the Holy Spirit’s help in enlighten the Word for us to “lead us into all truth” we can safely maintain sound doctrine in our Christian walk. This will prevent us from leaning to our own understanding (Psalm 3:5-6) rather than trusting God’s Word for our truth.
