It was asserted that Sigmund Freud didn’t attempt to cure his neurotic patients through psychoanalysis, but merely help them to accept the world as it is. He was not a believer – an agnostic, but he properly assessed the capability of man. To heal is the work of God, which He accomplishes through doctors, right living, and his miraculous intervention. Just because He uses men in His work, the cure does not cease being His. Just as the prophetic word (1 Cor. 14: 24-25), preaching, acts of lovingkindness, or teaching may be used of God in His work – salvation is through God alone.
We watched a movie entitled, “I am Not Ashamed”, about Rachel Scott, who was a student killed in the Columbine school massacre. This was the first school shooting and truly shocked the nation as something utterly incomprehensible. However, Rachel’s story became a great witness of faith in God and a demonstration of love in the midst of evil and hate. The movie depicted the contempt that secular American society has toward Christians. Christians are accused of thinking they are better than everyone else and condemning others. Christians are said to be condescending and offensive. Christians are strange, weird and freakish, so they should be shunned and ridiculed. Rachel refuted these lies and false stereotypes with her consistent and unwavering faith in God. Her diary was detailed with prophetic insight of God’s heart, goodness, and purposes that extend into eternity. (Heb. 11: 13-16). “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5). The darkness can not comprehend the light and there is no hope there. To receive life one must come into the light. The light is a person, Yeshua Messiah, and He stands at each persons heart knocking, so He may enter in and bring salvation.
Even Freud knew how futile and limited are man’s efforts. In the morning, as I pondered the complexity and futility of man without God I started to shave with my electric shaver. After a while noticed a peculiar sound and smell. I opened the top to see if there was an obstruction, and a live stink bug crawled out. To me this bizarre event was a demonstration of the incomprehensible complexity that exists all around us, not to mention that of God. “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! For from him and through him and for him are all things.” (Romans 11:33, 36). Sovereign God knows everything and brings everything into subjection to His perfect will. The sickness and depravity in this world cannot begin to be alleviated by those with good intentions. It is the truth and work of Yeshua Messiah that is the only hope and salvation for every man. Let us run to Him.
