The Defense of Marriage

gen2_24Congress passed a law with this title and purpose.  The Supreme Court set it aside, concluding Marriage between a man and a woman was not protected by the constitution. In the beginning God established marriage.  “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” [1]The Bible records that people were participating in marriage before Noah’s time. [2]Marriage between a man and woman is commendable as per the Bible.  “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” [3]Part of the reason for this is because marriage promotes the family and healthy godly children. [4]There are many benefits of marriage to both society and individuals.  Marriage is used as an illustration of the bond between Yeshua, Messiah and the Church. [5]Nevertheless, Marriage is limited to life on earth and does not extend into eternity.  “When

the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” [6]The need for marriage will be unnecessary in Heaven, although this is difficult to fully comprehend, I think the unity of heaven in the infinite eternal presence of God with our heavenly bodies will transcend any earthly concept.

So marriage was instituted by God and spiritual in its formation, “the two become one flesh.”  Marriage is not for everyone and is not a command.  The Apostle Paul believed that remaining single was best, but recognized that both marriage and singleness were gifts from God.  “I wish that all of you were as I am.  But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.” [7]He also explained that Married people must be concerned for each other while a single person is free to be concerned only for God. [8]It is true that God uses all of life’s aspects to conform each believer into the image of Yeshua, but God is an artist who creates each one with their own unique ability to reflect His glory in its infinite array.[9]

Therefore, the Body of Messiah should not be concerned that pagans reject, nor even understand the gifts of God.  They are lost and can not be expected to live for God or understand the will, purposes, or ways in which God leads His people in righteousness. This nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and under God’s authority, its demise will be completed by fully rejecting God’s rule and blessing.  Peter had good advice for those who lived in a pagan society.  “Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.  Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.  For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.  Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.  Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” [10]Be sure of this, the world is full of pain, sadness and captivity.  We were once like them living in futility and sin, but God delivered us from its bondage and set us free to follow Him. [11]Today’s pagans are seeking pleasure in more and more debauchery and proclaiming that they have a right to do whatever they want. However, it is the people of God, both married and single, that enjoy the favor and blessing of God, those under His authority and adopted into His family.
