What is Truth?

“Then Pilate said to him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ Pilate said to him, ‘What is truth?’ ” John 18:37-38

“…speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.” Oprah Winfrey

It is in vogue today to speak about telling “your truth” as if truth can be different for each person. Obviously truth cannot vary between persons as by definition “truth” is the sole correct viewpoint or fact. Pilate saw truth the same as many today when interviewing Jesus. He did not believe in an universal truth or thought it could not be discovered but the Bible teaches there is one. Jesus himself bore witness to the Truth and the Scriptures are the plum line we can use to evaluate what is true and what is false. Truth Incarnate was standing in front of Pilate but he did not recognize it.

We need to ask ourselves, what is truth? If the Bible, then we in the Church should follow it. Homosexuality then is sin despite the Gospel Coalition’s recent statement that Christians should affirm the legal right of adults to order their lives that way. We should never affirm this lifestyle, just like not affirming abortion when it was legal, but always speak out against these wickednesses and attempt to get the legal right to same-sex marriage overturned as we have to some degree with abortion. Likewise, we need to avoid the false teaching of Greenville First Baptist Senior Pastor Jim Dant who recently stated that “the Bible can’t be credibly used as an argument against same-sex relationships.” We need to uphold these and other Truths consistent with Biblical teaching and recognize that pastors and Christian organizations are not the arbitrators of Truth but only our plum line of the Word of God.

There is only one “Truth” which is found in the Word of God. Any personal “truths” will carry no weight on judgement day when we all will be judged according to Biblical Truths for our actions. If we are of the Truth, let us listen to His Word.
