Universal Truths of Righteousness

“But if we and our posterity neglect religious instruction and authority; violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”

– Daniel Webster

There are some matters every Christian should support, truth is absolute.

Abortion and Euthanasia – This should be a given, but it illustrates the difficulty inherent in an attempt such as this. The life of the mother is generally an indisputable exception that existed even when abortion was illegal. Rape and incest are two exceptions with less unity, but beyond these there seems no middle ground. Moreover, incest and rape are criminal actions condemned independently of their victims.

Adultery – even though this is rampant in society and the church, it seems there ought to be unity regarding the principle of the marriage covenant. Reasons for divorce need not be listed, because adultery is premeditated and need not become obscured by other matters.

Lying – This is abominable at its core, like the father of lies, Satan. Human pride excuses it by allowing measures and distinctions to disguise its evil intent, but it remains wicked.

Murder – is premeditated wickedness, a destructive act which can not be mitigated and one every human instinctively knows to be evil.

Stealing – Scripture tells use that Satan came to steal, even wicked governments steal from the weak and innocent. Taking that which belongs to another is criminal and no defense can be found among Believers.

Sexual immorality – this covers an increasing number of practices that are despicable, warped against nature, perverted, promiscuous, lascivious, lewd, and corrupt in intent through sexual desire.

Pride and arrogance – Though it is not a crime that can be fixed apart from words or actions, this is the heart of rebellion and all wickedness and evil. It is what initiated Satan’s fall. “You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:13-14)

Most of these are tenants of the Ten Commandments or application of its principles. They are truths given by God for our benefit and protection. Apart from God, antediluvian mankind was evil to the extent “every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” (Gen. 6:5) This would still be true today in humanism fulfilled. There is no hope, love, or faith apart from God and the law cannot bring righteousness, but Believers can seek unity in all God’s gifts to His children.
