Self Knowledge and God’s Light

1cor3_13-2Watchman Nee collection Vol. 1 is several writings put together into one book.  Watchman Nee is one of my favorite authors because he well understands the Spirit life and the word of God.  He comments on 1 Corinthians 3 which describes the judgment of work done by believers during their life time and whether or not it will be rewarded in the future life, (which is apart from salvation).  He goes on to say that doing the will of God is preeminent in this judgment, rather than our beliefs or feelings or thoughts, what is done matters.  We have… the light of God that shines and enlightens us to know his will, but we must be willing to do God’s will if we want to know that will. (Psalm 25:14).

He goes on to explain that we need to ask God to search us to see whether there is any wicked way in our hearts, which we may be blind to. (Psalm 139:23-24).  As God purifies us and with a heart desiring to do His will, He will make His will known. (John 7:17).
This cut me deeply as it is quite easy to become distracted by the busyness of life and to allow wicked lust or greed or selfishness to gain a foothold in our hearts.  This resulting blindness and double mindedness block the communion with Holy Spirit and leave us impaired in a spirit filled walk knowing and obeying God’s will.

All believers want to please God and obeying His will is the one thing that is certain to please. Remember, we are saved by grace and His loving kindness is everlasting, so we are not talking about salvation, but rather, our walk with God as saved believers.  “Come, let us return to the Lord.  He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.  After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.  Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him.  As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:1-3).
