It is Christmas Eve. The night before we celebrate the birth of our Savior. A time when, as C S Lewis said, “The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.”
Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. Personally, I enjoy it all – the music, food, gifts and general good cheer that accompanies the season. But most importantly I love the remembrance and celebration of the birth of Jesus, the reason for the season. Corrie Ten Boom said it best – “Who can add to Christmas? The perfect motive is that God so loved…the world. The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son. The only requirement is to believe in Him. The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life.”
I love to read the scene where the Angel Gabriel announces the coming birth of Jesus to Mary in Luke 1:28-33. “ ‘Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!’ … Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Jesus was born of a virgin as the Son of God to establish his eternal Kingdom. Through his subsequent death on the Cross he took our sins on Him and provided us an opportunity for eternal life if we simply believe in Him. At this Christmas season let us remember our greatest gift of all, our Savior, and the eternal life he provided for us.
