“The sky if falling.” Chicken Little uttered these words over and over and some began to believe her. The lost (an acceptable biblical term referring to those who do not currently believe in God) spew forth a seemingly endless list of pending doom for this world. Here is a brief incomplete list:
– Nuclear Destruction
– Over population growth
– Global climate change
– Asteroid collisions with earth
– Comet collision with earth
– World wide disease epidemics
– Starvation through genetic tampering
– Poisoning of all air and water
There are other items which are subtopics of these listed, such as, freezing, flooding or drought caused by global climate change. Most of the items are caused or effected by man. This is because there is a general self-righteousness of those who promote cataclysm with loathing and blame of those who doubt them or disagree. If one is to believe only in mankind there must be a separation of Us and Them.
Christians are hypocritically accused of doing the same, but the distinction is that believers do not see the lost as being any more capable or prone to evil than they are in the natural. For Christians the distinction is faith; believing God and receiving saving grace or rejecting God and remaining under His wrath to come. This is another interesting similarity, as Christians believe in the apocalypse, but again with distinction; as the end of the world will come by God’s good will, rather than by the hand of man. “By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.” ( 2 Peter 3:7). Moreover, God will stop mankind from self-destruction. “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” (Matt. 24:22).
As to the end of the world, for Believers it means the coming of a new heaven and earth and eternal glory with the Majesty on High, our loving God Almighty. To the humanistic doomsayers they have nothing good with which to look forward and no hope. I don’t recommend listening to these doomsday proponents as they are depressed themselves and will depress others. It may very well be that the truth of earth’s limited existence is self-evident in the heart of Man, in order that he may turn to God. In John Bunyan’s Pilgrims Progress, Christian fled from the City of Destruction. The Bible says Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. (Prov. 9:10; Ps 111:10). Many have begun to seek God after getting an awareness of God’s coming wrath on sin. This is wisdom and the Mercy of God.
