Yeshua (Jesus’ Hebrew name) told Nicodemus in reply to his questions, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.…Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit….The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3, 5-6, 8) Nicodemus wanted rational physical explanations of Spiritual events, which is impossible, but Yeshua referenced Moses’ image of a snake as an illustration. (Numbers 21:9) There is no physical explanation as to how looking at an image of a snake on a pole can cure snake bite. Nevertheless those who were bitten were cured, if they had enough faith to simply look at the bronze image. No amount of mental rationale will understand Spirituality, as it requires faith, believing that which transcends our physical senses. 

One such illustration is when Yeshua turned water into wine. At a marriage celebration, “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’ ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ ” (John 2:3-5) Mary had faith that Yeshua could and would intercede and did not flinch when He offered an excuse, but took action to prepare the servants. Faith equals action in the Spiritual dimension. Yeshua, produced approximately 150 gallons of wine from water in six huge stone jars. That is equivalent to 750 bottles of wine. Perhaps, God’s gift to the newlyweds was a fully stocked wine store. 

How do we sense the Spirit beyond exercise of faith. Like the wind, the effects of the Spirit are real. The process of being born again is like becoming a new person. A new person has new perspectives, desires, beliefs, hopes, dreams, likes and dislikes. Moreover, Spirit gives birth to Spirit, which means the new person is Spiritually alive, unlike before. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, He is close and gently expresses His love in subtle ways a newborn can grasp. As we grow and mature spiritual communication develops and eventually we learn to walk in the Spirit. I think every mature believer can give you one or more stories that transcend physical explanation. My friend told me of a time when he heard the inner voice of the Spirit urging him to share about Yeshua with a man on a cruise ship. He prayed in reply that he would as opportunity arose. The fellow approached and asked him about faith in God. He replied, “Yes, he was a Christian”. The man asked several questions about Christian faith and my friend was able to give him scriptural answers to his satisfaction and acceptance. There were more specifics, but it was a divine appointment orchestrated by the Spirit, with foreknowledge, responses and consequences in reality. Another friend recounted to me his supernatural encounter with a foreign Muslim woman who sought him out, after she was instructed by an inner voice to ask to speak with him specifically. She asked him about faith in Yeshua and he told her everything she wanted to know. There also was confirmation of the Spirit, through inner voice, foreknowledge and effects in reality. “Nathaniel was taken to Yeshua, ‘How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, ‘I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Then Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’ Jesus said, ‘You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.’ ” (John 1:47-50) Nathaniel was not false, but utterly sincere. When Yeshua saw Him under a fig tree it must have confirmed an inner Spirit voice that spoke of him meeting Israel’s Messiah.
