“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” I Corinthians 6:15-20.
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20-21
As Christians, our bodies actually are the temple (home) to the Holy Spirit, given at the point of our belief in Christ (Ephesians 1:13). We actually have God living in us! Indeed, Believers are joined to the Lord and become one spirit with him. What power, what comfort this great Truth is. We therefore have a duty to keep our bodies from being contaminated with sin. In particular, Paul in Corinthians implores us to flee sexual immorality. This is not easily done in the age we are living in, with the loose sexual morals thrust upon us all around. However, the sex act is a very spiritual bonding experience between a husband and wife and even when performed with a prostitute a person leaves something of themselves with her. This is a stark warning to the consequences of sin. Sins can certainly be forgiven but there are consequences many times left over from the sin. This fact should give us incentive to live as holy a life as possible.
Fortunately, we have God inside us which can empower us to live a holy life if we will die to self and allow him to live through us. This is something we will not be able to perfectly accomplish this side of eternity, due to our fallen nature, but we should endeavor to die daily and not allow our self to control us. Let us live each day remembering that we are bought with a price and are no longer our own and that we owe the Holy Spirit the cleanest possible temple to live in. Let us live by faith and glorify God in our bodies.
