Shroud of Turin

“Just as there were many who were appalled at him— his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness—” (Isaiah 52:14)

The Shroud of Turin is a fascinating piece of history, fabric said to be the burial cloth of Yeshua, Jesus of Nazareth. Scripture says, “Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” (John 20:6-7). Those who kept the shroud to this day say it is the same cloths referred to above. Much scientific analysis has been done to verify its source. 

The most distinctive feature is the image upon the cloths, a negative bearing incredible detail of a man who had been tortured, beaten, suffocated, hung up such that blood was drawn down into the legs and abdomen as if crucified.

Throughout all tests and examinations there is no known explanation of how this image was created or transferred to the cloths. Even with today’s technology it cannot be duplicated.

Scripture foretold, “I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.” (Isaiah 50:6)

I found this medical forensic analysis of the image: https://renewaljournal.com/2021/12/22/medical-forensic-explanation-of-the-shroud-of-turin/  It stated, “You can also see the lack of hair in the beard, as if pieces had been deliberately pulled out.” Moreover, there are complete descriptions of nail holes in the hands and feet. A full post-mortem account is given to the wounds in the subjects side between the ribs by a spear. 

This statement is made at the very outset: “We do not base our faith, or hopes, on an artifact but, although controversial, it does provide confirmation of the brutal torture and trauma of crucifixion that Jesus suffered.” Irrespective of the details of the cloths similarity to descriptions by eye witnesses and recorded facts in scripture, faith must rest in Scripture. Considering the outlandish statements and concocted theories which come from “science” today on a variety of questions about the nature and origins of the universe to all sorts of historical verification of the Bible, there is ample reason to discount scientific opinions. However, archeology continues to confirm Biblical accuracy. An unexplainable, controversial image on cloths confirming the crucification appears to align with characters of God’s hand, yet each one must decide for themselves.
