There is an awful lot of legacy software in use by companies throughout many industries. Legacy software is old software, outdated by current standards, that is still in use. It may not be the most efficient, fastest, or look slick, but it works and gets the job done, which makes it worth keeping. A person’s legacy is the gist and meaningfulness of one’s life work. When I was in my early forties I had a mid-life crisis, I didn’t buy a sports car or Harley, but I longed for meaning, for virtue and significance. Now some twenty years later I listened to a talk about significance and meaningfulness and I considered my life’s work. I felt a profound sadness come over me, but why? Was I mourning that I had never accomplished anything great or noteworthy; that I was a nobody? Was my pride hurt? What were these emotions telling me? I contemplated these issues throughout the evening and went to sleep.
In the morning, by the Spirit, I opened to Jeremiah and read, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, exercising loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,’ says the LORD.” (Jer. 9: 23-24. NKJV).
The Word of God is a fountain of wisdom and life. ” ‘This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,’ declares the Lord. ‘I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,’ declares the Lord.” “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jer. 31: 33-34).
The new covenant through Yeshua Messiah has brought and will bring God’s people into right relationship with their Lord God Almighty. In this glorious relationship, by His mercy, and through Yeshua Messiah, I understand and know God. That is the legacy in which I will glory, and I am His creation, so there is no place for pride, only thanksgiving, adoration, and praise.
Work as unto the Lord. Love and be loved by God. Rest and rejoice in Yeshua because in Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Press into all that for which God has called you. Glory in your God, He is turning your sadness into joy.
