The Real Walking Dead

walking-deadFor the past few years, there have been numerous shows and movies about Zombies.  The most prominent is AMC’s, The Walking Dead, which is going on its 8th season.  When people die, they turn into a zombie-like, dead man walking, also known as a “Walker” and immediately start seeking to devour the “Living” people.  Like the Zombie curse, sin entered this world through Adam.  As a result, all humanity is born under the curse of sin.  The Bible warns, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8).

This world is filled with people who are under the influence and control of Satan.  They are walking dead, zombie-like people who are going through life seeking to devour the Living as they submit to Satan’s control and do his bidding.  We see this lawlessness in many forms such as the pornography, illegal drug, and sex slave industries that devour the young and innocent.  Brutal dictators, mass shooters, and suicide attackers are single-minded in their pursuit of power and control as they murder at will.  Other examples such as abusive parents or spouses, crooked politicians, violent activists (rioters), dishonest business persons, thieves, adulterers, sexual predators, liars, and gossips are less obvious but Walkers none-the-less.  They have no pity on their victims as they devour one and move on to the next, putting their self-importance and self-serving will above the well-being of others.

In the Walking Dead, when someone is bitten by a Walker, the bitten body part must be amputated or the bite will infect the entire person.  Likewise, when we are infected by sin, it is critical that we eradicate it ASAP before it consumes us entirely.  Jesus taught, “If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire” (Matt 18:8).

In the Walking Dead, it seems like the “Living” have no hope.  Survival is dependent on one’s own ability to fight off the “Walkers” with no end or remedy in sight.  Fortunately, the Walking Dead television show is not reality.  We have a solution, a Savior, who releases us from the curse of sin and death and protects us from the works of Satan.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NASB) proclaims, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.”

As believers, we are among the living.  We must put on the whole armor of God in order to effectively resist the devil and the works of his zombie-like Walkers.  We also must help protect the young and innocent from being devoured and teach them the way of salvation.
