The Unforgotten Sparrow

“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:4-7

I have recently been watching some reruns of “The Waltons” and have been reminded how well-written and decent some of the episodes are including many with Biblical themes. A far cry from the woke, immoral shows that populate television today. In one episode of the Waltons, the youngest daughter finds an injured raccoon named Pete and tries to nurse it back to health. However, it eventually dies and the daughter cannot understand why and is very hurt. The Father at the gravesite where they bury it gave a little talk saying that since the Lord watches over the sparrows he would do the same to Pete. It was a sweet episode and reminded me of the verses above.

It is comforting to remember that God watches over His people as well as all of creation. Even a little sparrow that is virtually worthless is not forgotten by God. The hairs of our heads are all numbered. This shows that God is concerned about even the most insignificant details about us. Therefore, we can fully trust our God to care for and protect His people. As Christians, we are not to fear man. Only God is to be feared – the one who has the power and authority to cast those who reject Him into Hell.
