Heaven Lost

Heaven is described in the Bible and most everyone would like to go to heaven. The Eastern religions do not describe a delightful heaven, but rather, depict an absence of earth’s pain or a nirvana of nothingness after an endless cycle of reincarnation. Islam promises seventy virgins to martyr’s in Allah’s jihad, which sounds rather dismal in comparison, particularly, for women. However, the Judeo-Christian heaven is where God’s people live in His presence in the afterlife. It is exceedingly wonderful with glory unending. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3) God is in Heaven with infinite love and glory. Each person in Heaven will receive a reward for what they have done during their life. (Matt. 16:27)

Yeshua, (Jesus’ Hebrew name), said to his followers, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2)  It is described as a celestial city, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Revelation 21:23-27)

Many people are trying to be good enough to qualify for heaven. They rationalize that a loving God could not condemn anyone to eternal Hell. Many more today are becoming existentialist, reasoning there is no evidence of God or an afterlife. Therefore, it will be as John Lennon imagined, “Imagine there’s no heaven, It’s easy if you try, No hell below us, Above us only sky.” What a foolish gamble this is, standing at the precipice of eternity, only a heartbeat away, rejecting God’s word, Creation’s testimony, and the sense of eternity within our own heart. (see John 1:1; Rom. 1:19-20; Eccles. 3:11) Wickedness produces this blind stupidity or foolishness. “…and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)

Yeshua said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Mark 8:36-37) He implored people, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” (Matt. 7:13) He elaborated when asked whether only a few would be saved, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’ There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.” (Luke 13:24-28)
